  • Title: Community Based Nursing Education Addressing the Challenges of Multidimensional Poverty of Bihar

Synopsis:

Bihar State continues to be the poorest state in India with an MPI 1 (Multidimensional Poverty Index) 42.6 % which means almost half of the Bihar Population is Multidimensionally poor. 2 Lack of reliable health care workers and nurses, poor health seeking behavior, poor income and ignorance and superstition
lead the very sick to the quacks ,self-proclaimed doctors, black magic and witch craft or not being treated at all. Poor nutrition and poor hygiene results in epidemics of communicable and non-communicable diseases which could have been prevented with planned health education. Women power which is very influential in changing the health and socioeconomic status is very much underutilized due to neglect of the girl child and their education, early marriage and poor maternal and child care. Community oriented  Nursing training opportunities provided in the community for the women of the community can produce nurses who can be instrumental in ongoing primary, secondary and tertiary disease prevention and improvement of economic power and transformation of Bihar. With this vision in mind, thoughts and plans are initiated for establishing a training school in the community and the process of building up infrastructure and faculty are in place. Candidates from the community for nurse training are being prepared through a planned pre -nursing course.

Encouragement, support and prayer are required so that Jesus’ love will be demonstrated to the community through the nurses who are trained and they will continue to transform the community of Bihar.

Our mandate- Luke 4:8. Our reward- Mathew 25: 40

Biography:

Born in south India and educated in Christian institutions. Pursued studies up to PhD.  Worked as nursing teacher and professor in India and Canada majority of time in Canada (about 20"years).  I am a Canadian citizen of Indian origin.  Husband passed away in 2007.  We have three children and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all living in Unites States.

Accepted Jesus as my savior at 12 years old since then always prayed and worked to grow as a mature Christian and wished for an a opportunity to serve the poor and needy and share the love of Jesus.  Due to many circumstances and family responsibilities only limited opportunity were available.  In 2011, in response to an obvious call through a question "WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR TIME TALENT AND TREASURE?", I decided to continue to serve the people of Bihar while God keeps me healthy and able.

CurrentlyI function as a member of the Governing Board of New India Evangelistic Association (NIEA).  I stay and help in the Christian Medical Centre and Hospital in Bihar, and help with other socio spiritual activities of the organization.

The condition of women in Bihar is of my special concern. Bihar is the poorest State in India and one of the poorest in the world, and women take the brunt of it all. Poverty ill health, superstition, early marriage, lack of education, other cultural malpractices keeps them in a hopeless state of mind. It is my prayer that I will be able to at least start a momentum in improving the condition of women so that they will be contributing to the betterment of the community spiritually, mentally, socially and physically.
