“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.”
(Ephesians 1:18-19)

GMMA August 2017 Monthly Newsletter

President’s Greeting

Dear Beloved GMMA Family,

August already begins a new academic year! I commend about 120 members who have attended the three August mission trips. Each mission trip grants the benefit of serving as healers as well as being healed ourselves. As we look forward to another great year of doing missional life together, I invite you to start with a prayer. Praying for GMMA every morning is a great privilege and an honor for me. As images of you all dance in my mind during prayer, my heart takes a leap.

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.” Ephesians 1:18-19

Dear Lord, we thank you for revealing Your glory through the works of GMMA. Let Your will be done.
We hold to Your promises, O Lord, as we humbly request of these things.
We pray for our spiritual eyes to be enlightened so that we can see things clearly.
We pray that your words become real to us, in our daily thoughts and actions.
Let us find our true identity in You alone, despite our earthly family, ambitions, and emotions.
Let us live daily believing “I am what You say I am.” We are not what the world says we are.
We are not driven by our will nor what others say around us, but by your calling. We are Yours.
We are personally called by You, so we need Your grace to see this truth every day.
Let us seek your will in all things and take up the cross boldly as your disciples.
Bless us with the courage to scarify our popularity, promotion and easy life to be your disciples.
Let us be your shining light on our campuses and work places.
We ask that you open our eyes to the heavenly inheritance and calm all fears in our hearts.
We release all our shortcomings, insecurities, rejections and broken relationships to your omnipotent power.
In our restoration, may our eyes see things as You see.
We pray against any strongholds that may make us lukewarm, satisfied with our deceiving materialism, and idolizing knowledge. Empower us Lord to be a strong fortress.
We pray for a revolutionary revival that will transform the lives of multitudes in the healthcare community.
Teach us to care and pray about things that matter to You.
Let us lift you high in all that we do and honor You.
Allow us to live for You this day. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

In His Service,
Peter Chung M.D

From August 6-12, Drs. Yongsik Kim and Nathan Yee led a team of professionals and students on a mission trip to Zaragoza, Mexico. The 27 students were from the GMMA chapters of University of Texas in Austin, Texas A&M, University of Texas at Arlington, and the University of Houston. The team worked closely with both River Ministry and Ranchos Dos Countries. They set up a temporary medical clinic and a dental clinic in one of the churches run by Ranchos Dos Countries. The team saw about 70 patients per day. By God’s grace, 7 people were saved that week, and 3 of the students were baptized! Praise the Lord! In the moments spent outside of the clinic, the team took time to assess themselves spiritually and focus on God. They were blessed to have Pastor Jeremy Roh preach and to have the doctors and missions staff be an encouragement through their testimonies. The members are looking forward to what God has planned for Zaragoza and what plans he may have for each member in the future! Thank you for your prayers!

Please keep an eye out for the Fall missions dates! Stay updated by checking the “Master Calendar” at gmma7.org.

Your favorite memory of medical mission trip thus far?
Teaching Advanced Cardiac Life Support at KimManYu Hospital in Pyoungyang, North Korea. I was the youngest doctor on the team and I thought I was going to possibly give a short lecture, but when I arrived the VP of our organization asked if I could extend the training to 2 days. I was so surprised and in awe of the opportunity God gave me. It was so fun and a dream come true.

What is your passion in life?
Jesus is truly my reason for living and secondly I love my fam bam so much (Roh clan for life). But depending on how you define ‘passion’ I also have other passions such as justice for the poor, efficient and sustainable emergency medical systems, and music/leading worship.

Your words of wisdom for the GMMA students?
Pray. It is never too early to develop a strong relationship with God. Sit still, learn His voice, and go deep with the Lord. He is your father and best friend and strongest advocate. He will sustain you through the hardest times of your life and He will also give you more joy than you can imagine. Knowing God in it of itself is the greatest reward in this life. He loves us unconditionally, even at our worst. He will always love you. Remember this as you go through school, training and when you serve. Also, love and serve your family and spend time with them. It’s often the hardest to love those closest to you, but they are the first people God has called us to love and they can become your biggest supporters in life.

How do you want to live out this life until God calls you to heaven?
With great love. I want to be able to see what’s important to God and not what’s important to the world. It’s such a challenge because we are bombarded with messages of what’s beautiful, what’s important, what we should strive for and accomplish but often times it’s not the reality. God’s Kingdom often feels far from us, but we as His people are called to live it out here on earth. So I want to love and serve “the least of these” like Jesus and do what God has called me to on this earth so that I will have no regrets when I see Him face to face.

What is something you enjoy doing on your days off?
I love re-energizing out in nature, at the beach, in the woods, hiking… I feel a lot of peace in those surroundings. I also really love coffee shops and dinner parties with friends.

What is your favorite movie?

During the last weekend of July, board members and mentors made time to meet in Colorado to pray and seek God’s guidance for GMMA. Many members served wholeheartedly in various departments such as praise and worship. Dr. Paul Jo lead great worship with an impromptu GMMA praise band, composed of mentors and board members. Dr. Richard Kim once again shared his beautiful gift of praise through saxophone performances. Dr. Mary Roh and Jamie Roh blessed everyone through their amazing coordination. Dr. Chung, as always, leaned on the power of prayer; praying for a great anointing of God’s presence to lead the meeting. His prayer was answered, evidenced through testimonies and many tears. It was a beautiful sight to see, members from different states gathering to serve together for His glory. The mentors were blessed with a surprise guest, Dr. Meyer, who inspired and encouraged the group with his testimony of global dental missions.
