You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

GMMA October 2018 Monthly Newsletter

President’s Greeting

Dear GMMA Family,

A few weeks ago, we had the honor and privilege of being invited to the YWAM ministry in Kona, Hawaii. Eleven GMMA members were able to attend. We met to see if there were ways we could learn and work together for the special calling of medical missions. Loren Cunningham, the founder of the ministry and one of GMMA’s 2018 conference speakers, took valuable time to share wisdom and testimonies of what God has granted to YWAM for the 60 plus years of ministry. I was blessed hearing how the Lord had revealed His plan to Loren through a vision at the age of 20.  Loren said, “I saw wave upon wave of young people like me, missionaries still in their teens and early twenties, marching onto the shores of all continents of the world.” In obedience, Loren followed His instruction and walked the journey of trusting in the vision God showed him.  The vision actualized and continues to expand throughout the world. Pastor Cunningham has visited many nations on earth to share the good news and set up a base wherever he received confirmation from the Lord.  Today there are over 2,000 YWAM bases around the world, over 5 million young people have been trained, 25,000 self-supporting staff are working in 180 nations, and over 20,000 short and long-term missionaries have been sent all over the world. The numbers are impressive, but greater was the humility and freedom conveyed by the key leaders we met. In response to our acclamation, they gave all the credit to the Lord and made available any resources they had that could be of help to GMMA.  God’s grace and favor on GMMA is amazing and thankful beyond words. It brings me to the verse about where much is given, much is required with a greater wake-up call to follow responsibly in diligence the calling of GMMA.

God is giving us more serving opportunities through our medical mission partners. The world is crying out for help.  I pray that more of us will take advantage of these opportunities. YWAM has 26 ships operating in every corner of the world so that they can access the most remote places to deliver education and medical care as channels of spreading the Gospel. They welcome healthcare professionals to join on their trips. We will follow up and inform you further responsibly.

The meeting with YWAM reconfirmed that, for a young organization like GMMA, we can continue to claim this as His movement and follow the direction of the Holy Spirit.  We have learned a working formula based on how YWAM executes and sustains its massive global ministry.  All members go through a mandatory training which unifies them on how to do ministry anywhere in the world. Their starting point is always to hear God’s voice together and follow His leading without delay and go. Obedience without delay and the power of faith manifest in accomplishments beyond human efforts.  They place the authority of Christ and the truth of the Bible at the core. They ask the Lord first and move when they hear clearly. Their success was not made from more resources, human talents, or even finances, but from more of God working and supplying their needs, and simply their obedience as faithful disciples of Christ.

Please kneel before Him and saturate your mind and soul with the word of God daily. Then, we will hear Him together and commit together to say “Here we are, send us.” The Lord of  YWAM is the same God who leads GMMA. I am humbled and my heart is trembling with fear of the Lord as the leading servant of our ministry. Please pray for me as I pray in the hope for all of us to hear “well done good and faithful servant,” from the Father after the earthly death.  It is time to take His commission to our hearts and follow Him greater!

In Him,
Peter Chung M.D.

From August 25th to September 1st, Dr. Sang Hoon Ahn led a team of 32 students, postgrads, medical professionals (oncologist, nurse practitioner, RNs, dentists, and pharmacist) from the University of Washington, UCLA, UCI, UCSB, UCR, UCSD, and BIOLA on a mission trip to Cambodia. The team partnered with Oriental Mission Church to go on the trip.
“The team visited two villages and held both clinics and VBS camps. Students prayed for each patient, which was spiritually very healing for the students and patients. The team was very consistent with the daily QT’s at missions and devotionals at evenings. Morning QTs were a wonderful way to start the day with God, and the evening devotionals were an efficient way to come back to God and reflect on what we learned and how God was working on these Cambodian people and through us. The pastors from Oriental Mission Church really helped us stay focused on God and Jesus despite the busy schedule every day. Overall, everyone on the team claimed that Cambodia medical mission trip 2018 was an amazing and unforgettable experience.”     – Ellie Kim, UCLA Secretary

Professional Activity Highlights

GMMA professionals are serving in varied capacities globally, including clinicians, educators, pastors, mission leaders, etc.  They are all striving to honor God and live out Christ-centered missional lives. Some young professionals got married recently, some are becoming empty nesters, some are preparing to retire, all beautiful life moments of this inter-generational community. Though we are spread out globally, we are connected through prayer and gathering to do medical missions together.  Below are a few of the happenings for the October issue.
  • Dr. Iris Lee is leading the October mission team in a very challenging area of Mexico. One of the professional members, Michelle, who is a pharmacist, took out time on Sunday to complete medicine inventory for the trip.  The dedication of the professionals is a great way for our students to learn about living for Christ.  Please pray for the team.
  • Florida professionals served the officer’s retreat through serving as speakers and providing resources.  The students were trained in the fundamentals of being officers on campus, praying together, making decisions together, and having some fun in between.
  • Some leaders were able to attend a special historical meeting with Pastor Loren Cunningham of YWAM on the campus of University of Nations in Hawaii. Cooperative partnership in supporting the next generation and the practical strategies of meeting demands of medical missions were discussed and supported through lots of prayers as they all sought for His will to be done.  Lessons on following the leading of the holy spirit and walking in total humility and obedience were mentioned as for how we can ride through God’s movement in freedom and fervency.  We are thankful for mission partners reaching out to share and collaborate with GMMA.
  • September monthly prayer meeting was held at Dr. Sue Suh’s free community dental clinic.  It was a blessed time of testimonies, praying for each other, and praying for many prayer topics of GMMA.  Together we are strong.
  • Our young professional leader, Dr. Luke Shin’s missionary parents in Burundi received a notable honor this month in South, Korea. They are the recipient of the Underwood Missionary Award for 2018. It is presented to a nominated missionary who has served for more than 10 years on the field.  They will be using the award money to build a prayer house. Praise the Lord!

“Ahithophel was counselor to the king; and Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend”
I Chronicles 12:32

Hushai was called ‘King David’s friend’ and Jesus has called us ‘friends’. Friends spend much time together and communicate with each other intimately. Do you want to spend more time with God and communicate with Him more intimately?
